Preparation for the tax consultant
Cross-border commuters from Austria to Switzerland / Liechtenstein

Preparing for the tax advisor
Tips for new cross-border commuters
As a future cross-border commuter, you should also think about talking to a tax advisor, because from now on you will have to make quarterly tax prepayments in Austria and submit a mandatory income tax return once a year.
Expert tip 1: Register with the tax office
Don’t forget to register with the tax office! All cross-border commuters must register with the tax office at their place of residence. To do this, you must either complete the cross-border commuter questionnaire and send it to the tax office together with your employment contract and a copy of your ID, or you can use the online service of the Austrian tax office. Via FinanzOnline you can easily fill in the cross-border commuter form online, save it temporarily and submit it. You can find the form under “Further services” and “Further applications”.
Based on your information, the tax office will calculate your expected tax and send you the cross-border commuter registration card. In Austria, you will then pay your tax in advance on a quarterly basis (February 15, May 15, August 16 and November 15).
Expert tip 2: Calculation of tax in Austria & net salary calculation
Let our experts calculate your expected tax burden in Austria. As you will be making quarterly tax prepayments in Austria in the future, you should know how much you need to set aside each month. We will be happy to help you with this calculation. We will also be happy to calculate your net salary in Austria after deduction of all taxes in Switzerland / Liechtenstein, health insurance and Austrian tax(calculate net salary).
Expert tip 3: Amortization of health insurance
Health insurance contributions can be fully written off in the income tax return of a cross-border commuter! Since the write-off of private supplementary health insurance as special expenses has been abolished, many people mistakenly believe that the health insurance of a cross-border commuter can no longer be written off. This is not correct! Health insurance for cross-border commuters can still be deducted as income-related expenses and therefore continues to reduce the tax base by 100 percent.
